One could definitely play this clarinet in tune with the right mouthpiece. I will have to check when I get them back. The Portnoy has a 14.8mm bore, and that could be one part of the difference, since I think the Chedeville is 15mm. I did read that the factory had a fire & lost all its records which may explain. Wow, what a difference a mouthpiece makes! If one uses the right mouthpiece it makes a whale of a difference. I cant even find a list of Couesnon serial numbers to be any more accurate. I have found some Couesnon instruments that are better. But even pulling more, there are areas of the instrument that are too sharp. I do see 53 inside the pineapple which means manufacture date of 1953. Couesnon made during a very short period altos with bell keys on the right but with old style ('T') key guards. I should have pulled more than 1mm in the middle and at the barrel. In typical mysterious Couesnon fashion, I cant find any obvious serial numbers anywhere. Intonation summary: In spite of obvious signs that Couesnon was trying to make a professional instrument, this does not arrive at professional intonation in the era that it was made. 2nd test pulled 1.4mm at center / Portnoy2
